Bobby Cox, the outgoing representative for the South Carolina House District 21, has announced he is suspending his campaign for S.C. Senate District 12.

“After much prayer and reflection, I have decided to suspend my campaign and not file for office,” said Cox in a post on his Facebook page.

The announcement comes just weeks after the Greer Republican had announced his intent to run for the seat. In his official statement on his Facebook page, he said that his decision to withdraw came following “unexpected work responsibilities and a demanding travel schedule” over the last few weeks.

“… these commitments would prevent me from giving the campaign — and more importantly, the people of District 12 — the full presence and energy they deserve, both on the trail and in the legislative session ahead,” Cox wrote. “Our community deserves a senator who can be fully present.”

Cox says that, as he steps away, he still plans to be committed to supporting whoever is elected to the seat in their mission of “making the Upstate the very best place to live, work and raise a family.”

Filing is open for both the Senate District 12 seat and House District 21 seat through Saturday, Sept. 6. Party primaries for the election, if necessary, will be Oct. 21, with the special election occurring on Dec. 23.
