The filing period has opened for two positions in the South Carolina legislature — Senate District 12 and House District 21.
This is a special election following the resignation of Senator Roger Nutt. Nutt resigned his seat due to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. Following his resignation, the State Senate set a timeline for a special election.
Party primaries for this election, if necessary, will be Oct. 21. The special election will occur on Dec. 23.
The same day Nutt announced his resignation, House Representative Bobby Cox announced that he would run for the vacant Senate seat. He chose to vacate his seat at the same time as Nutt, so that the two special elections could be held simultaneously.
Those wishing to file for either seat can do so by submitting their paperwork and filing fee to the State Election Commission (SEC), or to the County Board of Voter Registration and Elections in their county of residence.
Filing for the positions closes at noon on Saturday, Sept. 6.
