Spartanburg District Five Schools has announced Dr. George Austin as the new Principal of D.R. Hill Middle School.

As a member of the District Five family since 2021, Austin is excited to take on his next role at D.R. Hill. Austin comes from Florence Chapel Middle School, where he has served as Assistant Principal since 2022. He first joined Florence Chapel a year earlier as an eighth-grade math teacher.

Prior to his time in District Five, Austin served as Assistant Principal at Brewer Middle School and Pinecrest Elementary School, both in Greenwood, S.C. His education career started in the classroom teaching at-risk middle school students.

"I am honored and thankful for the opportunity to serve as the Principal of D.R. Hill Middle School," Austin said. "I am excited to partner with staff, families and the community to support student success."

Austin earned his Associate of Science in Electronics Engineering from Piedmont Technical College, a Bachelors in Middle Grades Education and a Masters of Education in Learner Centered Instruction from the University of South Carolina Upstate. He also holds a Masters of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of South Carolina and recently completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Teaching and Learning in 2025.

Dr. Austin will officially begin his new role on July 1.
