The Greenville County Schools Board of Trustees held its first meeting of the academic year on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Superintendent W. Burke Royster presented updates on the school system’s summer initiatives, including hiring. Going into the new academic year, Greenville County Schools has 815 new hires.Â
Following the passage of South Carolina Senate Bill 269, which allows school districts to hold a proprietary security license, Greenville County Schools became the first school system to obtain licensure. The license allows any school employee to attain a SLED Security Guard Certification and provides an enhanced training program with local law enforcement.
The school district also partnered with law enforcement to train staff for active shooter scenarios. 73 staff members were trained in the partnership program with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.
Other updates from Royster included a report on the school system’s nutrition services. Greenville County Schools received a USDA SCALES Grant, worth $982,000, which has allowed them to strengthen sourcing for locally-grown food.
All of the Board’s action items were approved unanimously. These included the approval of innovative and honors courses, a lease agreement renewal with SHARE Head Start, the approval of the 2025-2026 MBE Utilization Plan and the approval of a physical education exemption as discussed in executive session.
