It’s Fire Prevention Week, and the Greer Fire Department is sharing tips with residents on how to safely handle lithium-ion batteries.

Fire Prevention Week is a national campaign observed each year during the week of Oct. 9. This year, the campaign runs from Oct. 4-10, with the theme “Charge into Fire Safety.”

Here are some tips from the department on how to charge smart:

  • Always use the charger designed for your device.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions.

  • Never charge batteries on a soft surface.

  • Don’t use batteries or chargers that are damaged or showing signs of overheating.

  • Unplug charging devices when they are fully charged or when you’re not using them.

  • Keep lithium-ion batteries away from extreme heat.

  • Keep your devices within sight on an airplane.
