The Greer Police Department, alongside the Spartanburg County Animal Welfare Services, is currently investigating a report of animal cruelty.
The Police Department released a statement on Wednesday saying that they were aware of a report of animal cruelty circulating on social media. The report alleges that a Greer woman’s cat was tortured and killed by a group of juveniles.
In a Facebook post from March 8 with nearly 400 shares, photos show a deceased, shaved cat in a trash can. The post claims that this cat, named Ginger, was regularly fed and cared for by local Maggie McClinton before he was stolen by a group of teenagers in late February. One video shared appears to show the individuals leaving the scene with the cat.
In the same post, it is alleged that the teenagers returned the cat’s deceased body in a trash can to McClinton’s residence on March 6. It was roughly shaven with evidence of cuts and bruising, and another video shows what appears to be individuals holding the cat down while shaving it and laughing.
The Greer Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is actively investigating the matter, according to department officials. Additional information will be released as investigators are able to do so.
