South Carolina Ports’ Inland Port Greer had a record year in 2025, with nearly 200,000 rail moves.

Located along the I-85 corridor between Atlanta and Charlotte, Inland Port Greer provides quick access to rail and interstate, allowing shippers to reach 94 million customers within a one-day truck drive, port officials say. The port boasts 11-minute turn times, 24/7 gate access and overnight rail provided by Norfolk Southern six days a week.

Inland Port Greer opened in 2013 and has averaged a 13% year-over-year growth in its first decade of operation. Greer now regularly serves more than 150 customers throughout the Southeast, with strong export demand helping to balance the flow for ocean carriers calling the Port of Charleston.

“What began as a strategic investment for key local clients 13 years ago has grown into a critical asset for the entire Southeastern supply chain,” Micah Mallace, SC Ports president and CEO said. "Inland Port Greer offers better service level at a lower cost; those two do not typically go hand in hand. This unique offering has proven to be a game changer for the many shippers utilizing this inland port."

To prepare for planned growth, SC Ports recently completed a $55 million expansion project at Inland Port Greer, boosting its annual rail lift capacity to 300,000. Site enhancements include an expanded container yard to increase cargo capacity by 50%, an expanded chassis lot, and 9,000 feet of additional rail to efficiently handle longer trains. The Greer-Charleston route is one of the largest international intermodal lanes in Norfolk Southern’s network.

“As evidenced by recent milestones, Inland Port Greer is a proven success and Norfolk Southern is proud to be SC Ports’ rail partner supporting its continued growth,” Shawn Tureman, Norfolk Southern vice president Intermodal Automotive said. “Our overnight rail service and the scale of this intermodal corridor give cargo owners in the Southeast the speed, reliability and flexibility they need to compete, while also delivering meaningful environmental benefits by shifting freight from highway to rail. Together with SC Ports, we’ll keep focusing on further enhancing this dependable, high-capacity gateway that moves goods efficiently from the port to inland markets and back.”

Mallace, who has pledged top-of-line customer service and individualized solutions for BCO's most challenging needs, reaffirmed his promise.

“Businesses have long depended on SC Ports and Inland Port Greer to meet their most time-sensitive needs. By providing 24/7 service and swift rail connections to the Port of Charleston, we have demonstrated why Inland Port Greer is a trusted product in the Southeast market year after year,” Mallace said. “What we have been able to achieve at Inland Port Greer with our rail partner at Norfolk Southern shows how we consistently deliver competitiveness and reliability for our customers’ supply chains.”
