A familiar face will soon begin a new chapter in Spartanburg District Five, as the district proudly announces Ms. Lisa Dunagin as the next Principal of River Ridge Elementary School.

Dunagin currently serves as Assistant Principal at Berry Shoals Elementary School, where she has been since 2023.  At Berry Shoals, she helped transition the school from the intermediate to the elementary school level and has worked to establish a positive culture focused on student success, collaboration and strong relationships with families and staff.

Dunagin brings nearly two decades of educational experience, joining District Five in 2021 as a District Mathematics Coach supporting both elementary and intermediate schools.  She began her career in the classroom, teaching 4K, Kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grade in nearby Spartanburg District Three.  While In District Three, she earned the honor of District Teacher of the Year.

“I am grateful for this opportunity, and I’m excited to begin building relationships with the students, staff and families at River Ridge,” Dunagin said. “River Ridge is an outstanding school with a reputation for academic excellence and I look forward to learning and growing together.”

Dunagin earned her Bachelors in Elementary Education from Limestone University, along with a Masters, with a focus on K-8 Math and Science, from Walden University.  She holds an Education Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision from Converse University, and is working toward a Doctorate in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment from Walden University.

Dunagin’s selection comes as longtime River Ridge Principal, Dr. Glenda Bigby, prepares to retire at the end of June, following an extraordinary 52 years of service in Spartanburg District Five.

“Dr. Bigby’s impact on District Five is truly immeasurable,” Dr. Randall Gary, superintendent said. “As we honor her incredible legacy, we’re also excited about the future of River Ridge under Ms. Dunagin’s leadership.  The future of this great school remains bright.”

Dunagin will officially begin her new role on July 1.
