Nine teams of local students will soon partner with area construction companies for Hard Hats for Hounds, a hands-on skills competition in Spartanburg County.

The teams will compete to design and build custom dog houses, which will be judged and voted on by community members. Proceeds from the event will benefit the new Spartanburg County Pet Resource Center and Build for a Better Future Foundation.

Participating schools include RD Anderson Applied Technology Center, Daniel Morgan Technology Center, Master Skills Center, Institute of Innovation, Swofford Career Center and the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind. The competition offers significant prizes, including $7,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place and $1,000 for third place, awarded on behalf of the Build for a Better Future Foundation.

Community members are invited to view the completed doghouses at the Spartanburg County Pet Resource Center on April 25 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The public voting period will be open from April 25 through May 1, and those who don’t get to see the builds in person can view them online beginning April 25.

Following the voting period, the dog houses will be sold via online auction from May 2—5. An awards ceremony for the winning designs will be held on May 7.

The event is hosted in partnership with Spartanburg County, the City of Spartanburg, Spartanburg Community College, OneSpartanburg, Inc., and the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce. For more information, visit the event website HERE.
