The Surgery Center at Pelham (SCP), a leading ambulatory surgery center in Greer, has announced that Dr. Frank Armocida, MD, is the first physician in South Carolina to perform total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures using Stryker’s innovative Mako Robotic Power System (RPS).

SCP is the first ASC in the world to offer this groundbreaking technology. Stryker introduced Mako Handheld Robotics in February 2026 — a system that responds to the surgeon’s hand movements to guide the saw and stay aligned with the surgical plan.

Armocida, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Medical Group of the Carolinas – Orthopaedic & Spine Surgery – Pelham, specializes in treating arthritic and degenerative conditions of the hip and knee. A graduate of Clemson University and the Medical University of South Carolina, he completed his orthopedic residency at MUSC and a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics in Baltimore.

Armocida was actively involved in the research and design of the Mako RPS technology in partnership with Stryker, which is why he is the first surgeon in the country to bring this innovation to patients in an ASC setting.

“I’m thrilled to bring the Mako RPS to patients in South Carolina,” Armocida said. “This technology enhances surgical precision, minimizes tissue disruption and supports faster recovery times in an outpatient setting. It aligns perfectly with our focus on minimally invasive procedures, allowing patients to return home the same day with improved outcomes and less pain.”

SCP specializes in outpatient joint replacements, offering partial and total knee procedures that leverage advances in pain management and specialized care. By incorporating this handheld robot, SCP continues to redefine orthopedic care in the region, focusing on restoring mobility and quality of life for patients suffering from severe arthritis or joint disease.
