In less than a month, the Medicare open enrollment period will begin. Health insurance can be a stressful topic for many, from cost to ensuring you have the right coverage for your needs. But there’s one “guy” in Greer who makes it his mission to take the stress out of the process.
Guy Furay founded The Insurance Source in October 2005. Originally located on Trade Street, Furay and the team later moved their brick-and-mortar off of Wade Hampton Boulevard.
The Insurance Source has earned recognition from the Greer Chamber of Commerce, The Greenville News and the Post & Courier over the years. In 2024, the company was named Guide to South Carolina’s Best of South Carolina for insurance agencies.
“Given there are thousands of insurance agencies, that's a tremendous honor that all the people in the Upstate feel like we are the best of that crop,” Furay said. “And it's not me, it's the team. The team is tremendous.”
Some of Furay’s team have been at The Insurance Source almost as long as he has. He attributes their success to their care for clients, regardless of who they are or their situation.
“It all boils down to one thing, and that's the customer,” Furay said. “We take something that's very difficult for lots of folks, and we make it not so difficult.”
Furay is a self-proclaimed “insurance geek,” who reads up on a lot of news in the insurance world. He says he does this so his clients do not have to, comparing health insurance to a maze that his team gets to act as guides for.
“[You don’t] want to go into that maze by yourself, because you don't know what you don't know,” Furay said. “Insurance is one of the most important products that you can buy. It's something we need, [but] it's something that is uniquely challenging for most people to understand.”
Furay says that it was this challenging aspect of insurance that made him want to pursue the field and help others.
“When you talk about insurance, it's abstract. It's something you can't touch, you can't see, you can't feel, and you can't taste,” he said. “So I sensed an opportunity to help people with all of that, [and] to take that stress away so they don't have to worry about it and can focus on living their life.”
In addition to helping clients at his practice, Furay is the outgoing chairman of the board for Health Insurance Agents for America. He also makes frequent trips to Washington, D.C., where he meets with congressional representatives, telling them the stories of his clients.
“Sometimes, the politicians don't know what their constituents are going through with regard to these types of issues, and worse than that, some of them don't care,” Furay said. “It's our job to make sure they care.”
Furay has already been to D.C. a few times this year, and the blog page of The Insurance Source’s website has several entries regarding the impact of federal decisions on health insurance.
Moving forward, Furay says he hopes to continue building the team at The Insurance Source so that they can continue to take on more clients and help the Upstate community.
“We want to help people. That's our reason for being,” Furay said. “We have a trademark for the phrase ‘we make health insurance easier,’ [and] that's the goal … By the time [clients] leave, we want them relaxed and confident.”
