Bill Rhyne was sworn into office on Friday, Oct. 7, as the Spartanburg County Sheriff. The ceremony was held in the County Courthouse, following a summer of campaigning in a special election for Rhyne. Rhyne also swore in his command staff on Friday, including Spartanburg County’s first-ever female command staff member.

Retired State Trooper Bill Rhyne has won the primary election for Spartanburg County Sheriff, taking 73.91% of the vote. He will run unopposed in the general election on Nov. 4. Paul Abbott Jr. is favored to win the Spartanburg County Council District Three primary election runoff, having 59.7% of the vote. If results proceed as is, Abbott will be on the November ballot, running against Democrat Kathryn Harvey and Forward Party candidate Sarah Gonzalez.

No winner was announced for the Spartanburg County Sheriff Special Primary, and a runoff election between Rusty Clevenger and Bill Rhyne will be held on August 19. The Spartanburg County Council District Three Primary also ended with no official results, and a runoff election between Paul D. Abbott Jr. and Jason C. Lynch will be held on August 19. Over 25,000 Spartanburg residents came out to vote in the special primary election, with a voter turnout rate of 12.4%.
