Indiana University recently completed a historic undefeated college football season capped off by an impressive win in the National Championship game. In the days and weeks since, experts have worked to try to understand how a program that just two years prior was among the worst college football programs of all time managed such an unexpectedly perfect season. Some have suggested that the meteoric turnaround stems from a basic lesson imparted from Coach Curt Cignetti: “Know Your Why.”

The concept is simple. Your “Why” is a statement of purpose that describes why you do the work you do. It is your calling. It is your conviction. It is your mission statement. For 26 years, the “Why” for the City of Greer has guided my work as Mayor. For me, every decision, every opportunity, and every new idea flows through the prism of truly understanding “Why” the City of Greer does the work that it does. My calling, my conviction, and my mission as Mayor of the City of Greer holds that the City of Greer exists for three essential purposes: (1) to improve the quality of life for all who live and work in the City of Greer; (2) to be a catalyst for the kind of quality new growth that gives residents access to the things that make them proud to live in the City of Greer; and (3) to keep Greer Greer by preserving the best qualities of our City at all costs and aggressively pursuing opportunities that help the City of Greer to become the best version of itself.

When it comes to quality of life, the City of Greer’s “Why” can be seen in the many small things our team does so well every day. Our Police and Fire Departments work tirelessly to preserve and promote public safety. We train. We drill, and we equip our police officers and firefighters with state-of-the-art equipment so that we can maintain the highest of public safety standards. For this, our Police Department has been nationally accredited. Our Fire Department has achieved and maintains public safety ratings among the top 1% in the country, and collectively, our quick response times assure that our public safety professionals are on scene to protect people and property within minutes. For quality of life, the City of Greer’s “Why” shows through again and again as our Public Services team works to fill potholes and clear our streets of debris. The City of Greer’s quality of life “Why” shows through in the way we leverage technology to promote efficiency, in the way we engage with residents of the City of Greer at every opportunity, and in the way we carefully allocate tax dollars.

Facilitating access to the things and amenities that make Greer the City of choice for our residents, or what some experts might call placemaking, has always been important to me as Mayor of the City of Greer. I’m proud of the work our City Council has done to preserve and improve our historic downtown. I’m proud of our commitment to recreation programs, parks, green spaces, and the investment in Greer Golf. I’m proud of our partnership with the medical systems in two counties that bring nearly every doctor and specialist possible right here to the City of Greer. I’m proud of the continued investments that those medical systems make in our City. I’m proud of our work with groups like Greer Relief, Greer Community Ministries, and the Soup Kitchen. I’m proud that our Council considers the impact on every single resident of the City of Greer with each vote that they take.

“Why” the City of Greer must continue to be a catalyst for growth is as simple as “Why” new growth is good. The best way for the City of Greer to ensure that growth is truly beneficial to its residents, that it raises our quality of life, and that it leaves no residents behind is to be an active participant in that growth. A manageable amount of quality growth inside the City of Greer is worth far more than the potential for murky uncontrolled growth just outside our borders.

Finally, my mission as Mayor of the City of Greer is to Keep Greer Greer. That feeling of “home” and the sense of small-town charm are what make the City of Greer truly special, and it must be preserved at all costs. But the City of Greer is not a small town. The City of Greer is a global powerhouse, and it always has been. With major industry representing countries all over the world, a regular stream of visitors interested in touring our town, and new residents arriving daily from nearly every state, “Keeping Greer Greer” means being strategic in how we embrace change. The investments that the City of Greer is making today in projects like the Public Safety Training Center and the Sports & Events Center represent the very best of preserving the small town charm of the City of Greer while recognizing our role as a major player in the Upstate and beyond, for these assets keep us safer, healthier, and more connected while leveraging new dollars and new investments offered by our guests and partners.

So, what is the state of the City of Greer in 2026? The state of Greer is steady. The state of Greer is dependable. The state of Greer is strategic. The City of Greer is in a strong financial position. Our staff members are among the most talented and highly trained professionals. Our plans are well thought out and battle tested. Our “Why” is pure. The City of Greer improves the quality of life of every resident every day. We facilitate new growth that gives residents access to world class amenities, and we keep Greer Greer by holding sacred our duty to preserve Greer’s small town feel while remaining aggressive and innovative. So, what is the state of the City of Greer in 2026? Well, Greer is the Center of the Universe, and everyone knows why.
