Greer 2002 state title photo
23 YEARS AGO, it was all for Greer.

The Greer Yellow Jackets tightroped through a daunting playoff run against top rivals — culminating in a 2003 Class AAA State Championship win, 33-17 over West Florence.

QB Sinclair Cannon made it happen both through the air and on the ground at Williams-Brice that night. He threw a TD pass to Chad Cartwright and rushed for a TD from seven yards out.

Arthur Sitton broke off for a 62-yard TD run early. The reliable Will Smith kicked four field goals. Greer’s defense held star West Florence RB Quentin Young — who rushed for over 2,200 yards that year — in check.

Everything clicked for Greer that night in a season that felt more and more magical as it went on. In the playoffs, Greer squeaked out down-to-the-wire wins over rivals Greenville and Union County to advance to Columbia.

HC Travis Perry brought the state title back to Greer for the first time since 1994, when he was an assistant on the coaching staff. He celebrated with his family after the game.

And that footage — all of it — was brilliantly captured by Yellow Jacket Sports Network in their 2003 “Road to State” documentary, which is partly shown below.
