Byrnes football recap pic vs mauldin

Byrnes QB Gideon Merhib (left) and RB Tre' Segarra both had two touchdowns in Friday night's 42-21 win over Mauldin.

On homecoming night for Byrnes football, the Rebel seniors dominated in a 42-21 region win over Mauldin.

Senior RB Tre’ Segarra — who was crowned homecoming king at halftime — rushed for two touchdowns and 110 yards, while fellow senior RB Jacobi Fuller added a rushing touchdown of his own. Senior QB Gideon Merhib passed for two touchdowns, and senior DB Nehemiah Beasley returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap Byrnes’ scoring.

With the win, the Rebels improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in 5-A Region 2 play.

“Happy to get the win tonight, especially on homecoming,” said Byrnes head coach Reggie Shaw. “Homecoming is a big deal here at Byrnes. This school and this town do it right. These nights don’t get old, seeing everybody from years’ past come back to celebrate. It’s like a big family reunion around here.”

“Homecoming is awesome,” said Beasley. “It’s a really good moment to come out here and play in front of all these fans who keep supporting us, and see some old faces. We [seniors] loved it.”

Beasley’s interception return touchdown came on a pass where his receiver stopped near the left sideline. The senior defensive back immediately dug his feet into the ground and make a break on the ball, stepping in front of the pass and going 41 yards untouched for six.

“I’d seen the receiver motion over like that a few plays earlier,” said Beasley, smiling as he recalled his pick-six. “So I just stepped in front of it and made the play and ran it back to the end zone.”

With Friday night’s win, Byrnes looks to be firmly in the driver’s seat for the 5-A Region 2 crown. Last week’s 49-21 victory over Hillcrest marked what will likely be the toughest task for the Rebels in region play.

But Shaw says his men are focused on taking it one game at a time, not looking too far into the future.

“It’s just about getting better with every game,” said Shaw. “The focus is on us and how we can improve. How we execute and how we do things, and how we continue to improve week after week.

“We don’t want to ever stay the same. We want to be peaking at this time of year and playing our best football as the playoffs approach.”
