They just keep on making history.
In front of a packed home crowd on Wednesday night, Greer volleyball rolled to a 3-0 win over Camden in the first round of the Class 4-A playoffs.
Greer’s student section was energized throughout the entire game. Specifically, five Greer students stood in the front row, all of them holding brooms, each with one big letter from the word “sweep” painted in white across their chests.
The Lady Jackets didn’t let them down.
“Being able to play in front of this home crowd meant everything to us,” said Greer head coach Melissa Godwin. “We’ve had an ‘earn it’ mentality all year, so to earn a playoff game at home was huge for us.”
With the win, Greer earned its first playoff victory since 2019. The Lady Jackets also improved their record on the season to 21-8, setting a new mark for most wins in a season in the past 20 years.
“We’ve defied a lot of expectations this year,” said. “We’ve defied a lot of things that were sent at us, but we never let that affect our team mentality. Right now, we’re just having a lot of fun. We don’t want this season to be over.
“The seniors on this team have been the backbone of the program and have given everything for this team. We are fighting to make the most of every moment with them.”
Damiah Polk, one of those seniors on Greer’s roster, agrees. She wants the ride to last as long as possible.
This season has been somewhat of a dream for Polk, as she’s leading her Lady Jackets to uncharted feats in her final season.
“As a program, we’ve been focusing on believing that we can do anything,” said Polk. “We still have that mentality of ‘Why not us?’ So we go out there, we ball out, we play with and for each other.”
“This team is so close, not just on the court but off the court, too,” said junior Anna Brown, who currently sits fifth in the state in total blocks with 97. “It’s not just volleyball for us. We’ve built relationships that go beyond the court. It’s a sisterhood.”
The next step in Greer’s journey? A daunting second-round playoff matchup against perennial power Wren. The Lady Jackets will travel to Piedmont for that contest on Monday, Oct. 27.
The task at hand is a challenging one, but they believe they’ve got what it takes.
“It’s that ‘Why not us?’ mentality. That’s what’s been pushing us all season long, and that’s what will keep pushing us,” said Brown. “We’ve done a lot of big things already this season. So why not us to beat them?”
