Byrnes junior running back Tre’ Segarra is already going down as one of the all-time greats to don a Byrnes Rebels jersey. Countless heroic performances in silver and blue have earned him that distinction.
But Friday night against Spartanburg? Segarra put up a performance that was otherworldly — even by his high standards.
In a dominant 42-7 win over the rival Vikings, Segarra rushed for 255 yards on 17 carries, collecting four touchdowns along the way. Both were career-high marks for the Rebels’ star ball-carrier.
“I guess I had a little extra in the tank,” said Segarra. “Not being able to play last week [vs. Eastside due to injury], it got to me… I knew I needed to make an impact when I came back.”
Check.
“He’s special, he really is,” said Byrnes head coach Reggie Shaw. “It was amazing to have him back tonight. You see what he can do; he can take over a game at any point, and our offensive line gave him some great blocking and room to run tonight.”
Segarra had touchdown rushes of 80, 48, 46, and six yards in the win.
Equally as impressive as his performance, however, was that of the Rebel defense.
For the second week in a row, Byrnes didn’t allow the opposing offense to score a single point. Spartanburg’s only score came on a pick-six on the game’s first drive. Last week against Eastside, the Eagles only managed six points, those also coming on a pick-six.
That’s no points allowed in the last 96 minutes of football for the Rebels’ “Strike Force” Defense. On Friday, the Rebels gave up just 83 yards of total offense to the Vikings.
“We’ve played two really good run teams the last two weeks,” said Byrnes senior linebacker Tyler Clark. “In practice, our entire message was making sure we were ready to stop the run, and we did that.”
Clark had one of his best games of an already stellar senior season against Spartanburg. He’s come into his own in a big way for the Rebels in his final year.
Friday night was senior night at Byrnes, and Clark made sure to show out.
“Tyler’s a guy you love to pull for,” said Shaw. “You just love him. He brings the intensity in practice and in everything he does. He loves his team and he loves his brothers, and he’s going to fight for them every week.”
Now sitting at 6-3 overall and 4-2 and region play, Byrnes is currently in a logjam near the top of the region with plenty to still play for. The Rebels could finish anywhere from No. 1 to No. 4 in the region and will need to beat Boiling Springs next week to be in the best possible position to host a playoff game.
With Segarra at his best and the defense playing like one of the top units in the state, anything could happen after that.
“We want to keep it going,” said Shaw. “I’m proud of these guys for how they’ve responded to some adversity this season. Everything we want to achieve is still in front of us.”
