Greer City Council moved forward on an ordinance that will permanently close a portion of Moore Street at its regular meeting on Feb. 10.
The Moore Street closure was the only item of new or old business heard by council on Tuesday night. Council voted 6-1 to approve the ordinance, with only council member Jay Arrowood voting in opposition.
According to the city, the railroad arm system located near Moore and Line Street are unsafe, with Moore Street being entirely behind the arms. Because of this, if a train comes through, drivers on Moore Street have no barrier between them and the train crossing.
The city has determined closure to be the best route forward and notes that the South Carolina Department of Transportation will be responsible for updating the railroad crossing station. All residents with adjacent lots to the closed portion of Moore Street have been notified of the potential closure and given an opportunity to speak at a public hearing.
Council will hear the ordinance once more before final approval at its next meeting. If the ordinance is approved, the portion of Moore Street will be closed and the asphalt will be removed.
Outside of their one item of new business, council heard an update on the Greer Farmers Market from Maggie Blair, president of the market. For a look at how the market performed in 2025, check out GreerNews’ coverage.
