Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) is launching GSP Change for Good, a new initiative that turns coins tossed into the airport’s fountains into donations for local nonprofit organizations.
Each year, GSP will partner with Upstate charities to distribute coins collected from the airport’s fountains. Airport officials say the program aims to provide airport visitors a simple way to support local organizations and shine a light on their work.
“Every year, millions of passengers and visitors pass through GSP and many take a moment to toss a coin into one of our fountains,” Kevin Howell, president and CEO of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District said. “With GSP Change for Good, those small acts of generosity will help support organizations that are making a difference in our community. We’re proud to give travelers another way to have a positive impact while they’re here at the airport.”
Recent coin collections from GSP’s fountains totaled more than $3,000, providing the initial funding for the program. Going forward, every coin tossed into a fountain will help support future charitable donations. For the inaugural year of GSP Change for Good, charitable partners include the Rebuilding Hope Restoring Lives Campaign of the Salvation Army of Greenville, Pickens, and Oconee Counties and the Salvation Army of Spartanburg.
“Each year, The Salvation Army helps provide food, shelter, clothing, job placement resources and more to individuals and families working to get back on their feet across the Upstate,” Major Michael Harris, Area Commander of The Salvation Army of Greenville County said. “The donations collected through GSP’s fountains help us continue to provide life-changing programs to our neighbors who need it most.”
