A new Greer-based bagel shop celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, inviting the community to come experience a taste of New York.
Legacy Bagels is owned by Andy and Ashley Streb, who, alongside their staff, make a variety of scratch-made bagels every day for their customers. The restaurant opened its doors in late January and has since been offering more than 10 bagel varieties with several spreads and toppings to choose from.
“This community has welcomed us with open arms, and we’ve enjoyed being able to serve them,” said Andy Streb.
The new shop at 2426 Hudson Road replaces Broadway Bagels, a Greer staple of over 30 years. Much of Legacy’s staff is made up of former Broadway Bagels employees, allowing customers to continue to see the familiar faces that have been behind their bagels for years. Streb says that the shop already has several loyal patrons, despite having only been open for a few months.
“A lot of the folks that were coming into Broadway [Bagels] continue to come here, and they are very appreciative that we kept it as a bagel shop,” Streb said. “We have a vast array of people that come in here, and it’s just great.”
According to Streb, every bagel is an act of love from the crew, with the process taking three days to complete. The dough is allowed 24 hours to ferment before rolling, proofing and cooling. On the third day, the dough is baked into the traditional New York bagels, giving them a crunchy exterior and a soft inside. Streb pulls this technique from his time growing up in Upstate New York, where he describes bagels as “a staple.”
Streb says that he hopes to continue to provide top-quality bagels to the community as the Legacy Bagels team sets its sights on potential future expansion in the Upstate. His favorite part of his work is getting to meet and build relationships with the community through food.
“I love the people that come in here, and we try to give them the best experience possible,” Streb said.
