The Town of Lyman was recently recognized by SafeWise as the seventh safest city in South Carolina for 2026.
SafeWise is a security research agency that uses FBI-reported crime data to rank cities within each state based on safety. This year, Lyman was ranked seventh in South Carolina — making the top 10 list for the third year in a row.
“We are proud to see Lyman recognized as one of the safest cities in South Carolina,” said Lyman Police Chief Jay Hayes. “This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of the officers of the Lyman Police Department, as well as the strong relationship we have with our community.”
According to data from SafeWise, Lyman’s violent-crime rate is 1.9 per 1,000 residents, and its property-crime rate is 8.3 per 1,000 residents. No robberies were reported in the FBI crime data that SafeWise used for its 2026 ranking.
Hayes said the department hopes to continue its work in building community partnerships as the years progress.
“Keeping Lyman safe is truly a team effort,” he said. “As our town continues to grow, we will continue working alongside our citizens and Town leadership, maintaining a visible presence in our community, responding to the needs of our citizens and providing professional law enforcement services.”
Upstate municipalities made up half of the Safest Cities 2026 list. Besides Lyman, SafeWise recognized Central, Fountain Inn, Walhalla and Wellford. For the full list of South Carolina’s Safest Cities 2026, visit https://www.safewise.com/research/safest-cities/south-carolina/.
