A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Friday morning for the rededication of the Wellford Armory.

The Wellford Armory, located at 910 Fort Prince Blvd., serves as a training and administrative facility for the local National Guard. It is one of the latest armories to be revitalized in the state of South Carolina, thanks to a $4 million investment from state and federal sources.

“It’s nice to see these projects coming along and these armories being updated,” said Capt. Robert Day, commander of the 174th Combat Engineer Company. “The biggest thing, though, is not only seeing the building change, but seeing the soldiers grow since then.”

The renovations took approximately 18 months to complete. The Wellford Armory was originally built in 1979, and the updates allow for a more spacious, modern facility for employees to work and soldiers to train.
