Charles William Smith, 79, a career United States Marine, passed September 29, 2026. He was born September 2, 1947, in Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of Clarence and Gertrude Smith.

Charlie gave 30 years to the Marine Corps. On dress blues he wore naval aviation wings above the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal, with campaign and service medals from a full career and the Combat Action Ribbon and unit awards opposite them. The awards marked a Marine who flew, who served in a combat zone, and who stayed long enough to finish what he started. He kept the Corps traditions the way Marines do.

He was the husband of Nancy Greer Smith, who passed in 2006. The mother of his children, Diane Benson Giacobbi, passed in 1994. He is survived by his daughters, Jo-Ann MacMunn and her husband Joe of Clinton, Massachusetts; Cheryl Pellicie and her husband Steve of Sumter, South Carolina; and Wendy Wilson and her husband, Barry of Goffstown, New Hampshire; and by his son, Keith Smith of Plaistow, New Hampshire. He is also survived by his brother, Stanley Smith of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, with a tenth on the way.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 15 at The Wood Mortuary Chapel with military honors. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Visitation will be held from 9;30 to 10:45 a.m. Oct. 15 at The Wood Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105, which were both Charlies favorite charities. Semper Fidelis.
