Something special is happening in the Ridge.
Blue Ridge football improved to 4-1 on the season on Friday night with a 63-28 win over Landrum in the storied “dark corner rivalry” game. It’s the first time in over a decade the Tigers have started 4-1.
In five games, Blue Ridge has matched its entire win total from last season.
“I’m proud of the kids… we were firing on all cylinders,” Blue Ridge head coach John Boggs told Blue Ridge Tigers Sports Network after the game. “I’m happy for these kids. Big game, big rivalry in a great [home] atmosphere, it’s huge to come out here and get that win.”
The Tiger offense was virtually unstoppable for the Cardinals, as Blue Ridge gained 498 total yards on the evening. Quarterback Gavin Forrester once again put on a show, accounting for 314 of those yards himself (190 passing, 124 rushing). Forrester also had six total touchdowns — three on the ground, three through the air.
Running back Jakorey Dodd had 152 total yards for the Tigers and three rushing touchdowns of his own. Wide receiver Mitchell Bobbitt hauled in six passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns himself.
Two years ago, Landrum dropped 74 points on the Tigers in a 40-point beatdown of Blue Ridge. This year, the roles were reversed.
“We had to come out and return the favor from what happened two years ago,” said Forrester. “I’d say we did that tonight.”
“They put 70 up on us two years ago,” said Dodd. “We had to come out here and get our get back.”
The biggest story of the night, however? The Blue Ridge defense and its performance in the second half.
After giving up 28 points in the first half, with the score tied at 28 all, the Tigers' defense buckled down and pitched a second-half shutout.
“We knew that if the defense could get some stops there in the second half, we would probably be able to pull away,” said Boggs. “That’s exactly what happened. I don’t know if [Landrum] was able to get a first down the entire second half.”
“That’s just how you’ve got to fight after halftime,” said Blue Ridge junior LB Brylon McCoy. “You can’t just give up after the half. You can never put your head down. You’ve always got to believe in yourself if you want to win. That’s what we did.”
The Tigers (4-1, 1-0 region) will look to continue their hot streak next week against Seneca, which will be far from an easy task. The Bobcats come into the contest 5-1 on the year and 1-1 in region play — their only loss coming this past week to rival Daniel.
Kickoff for Blue Ridge at Seneca is slated for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3.
