Mitchell Bobbit’s first-career touchdown was a long time coming.
His second wasn’t at all.
It took until the second game of his senior year for the Blue Ridge wide receiver/punt returner/kicker to find paydirt for the first time in his career. It came on an 82-yard punt return during Friday night’s clash vs. Polk County (NC).
Bobbit bobbed and weaved past defenders, speeding through his blocking lanes untouched to the end zone.
“As soon as I crossed into the end zone, I was in a whole other world,” said Bobbitt. “I can't even describe that feeling, not only for it to be such a great touchdown, but for it to be my first touchdown ever.”
Bobbitt didn’t wait long to dazzle the rowdy Blue Ridge crowd again, reeling in a 15-yard touchdown pass from QB Gavin Forrester in the fourth quarter — his second career touchdown.
“Mitchell is one of the most resourceful players we have, for lack of a better term,” said Blue Ridge head coach John Boggs. “He knows how to use the space on the field to get open, how to use whatever he needs to on the field to give himself an advantage. He’s one of the smartest players we’ve got.”
Bobbitt’s two scores — along with four total touchdowns from QB Gavin Forrester and a four-sack performance from DE Aiden Crump — helped seal a 35-19 win for the Tigers, and a 2-0 start to the season.
“We feel like we’ve got a ton of momentum now,” said Bobbit. “Last week against Wade Hampton, I’d say we played about eight minutes of truly great football. We’re still not exactly where we want to be, but we played a lot better for a lot longer this week.”
Blue Ridge will need to keep that improvement and momentum rolling, as the Tigers come up this Friday against an Eastside team firing on all cylinders. The Eagles are 2-0 on the year, outscoring opponents by an average of 49.5 points per game.
“We’ve had some really competitive games against [Eastside] the last couple of years,” said Boggs. “We’ve got to be able to hang onto the football this time and not turn the ball over. They’ve gotten us there in the past few meetings. It should be another really good matchup.”
