Before Byrnes PG Colt Fowler went to bed on Friday night, he prayed.
On a visit to College of Charleston with his parents — coaches Layne and Missy Fowler — he was deep in thought and prayer.
“I said while I was praying before bed that if I wake up feeling as good about [College of Charleston] in the morning, then this would be my next home.”
He woke up, breathed in the fresh Charleston air, and committed to the Cougars before noon on Saturday.
The No. 1-ranked senior in South Carolina will play college basketball in the 843.
“It feels amazing to be committed, and it makes this upcoming [high school] season way easier,” said Colt. “Charleston to me just stood out. I like the coaching staff, and that’s a big part of the reason. The playstyle, too. [Charleston] likes to move up and down the court and play fast. And they know how to develop players.”
On top of all of those reasons, it certainly didn’t hurt for Colt that his mother, Missy, was a standout for College of Charleston’s women’s basketball team. His father, Layne, also attended the school and played basketball there.
“My parents didn’t push me at all to commit here, even though they played here,” said Colt. “But I told them yesterday that if I feel like this now on my visit, there’s no way I can leave without committing in the morning. They were happy for me.”
Colt says he feels a weight off his back, being able to commit and now focus solely on his senior year. The standout point guard — who averaged 24 points and 11 assists last year — is the early favorite to win more Player of the Year accolades in the state. His Runnin’ Rebels are a favorite to play for a state title this season.
“I thank God for this opportunity and to be in this position,” said Colt. “And I thank all of my coaches for pouring into me, and for all of the other college coaches who have spent time to come out and recruit me.
“It’s just crazy to think about being in college next year. It feels like yesterday I was just a freshman. It’s wild.”
