An entertaining season for Byrnes football came to an anticlimactic end on Friday night at Dutch Fork High School, as the Rebels fell to the three-time defending state champion Silver Foxes 21-0.
The loss knocked Byrnes out of the Class 5-A Division 1 playoffs in the state quarterfinal round.
Both teams struggled to move the ball early, with Dutch Fork scoring the only points of the first half on a 7-yard touchdown run from Kyle Henry. Dutch Fork missed a 40-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.
The Silver Foxes took control in the second half, however, stymying the Rebel offense and coming up with two late rushing scores to put Byrnes away.
Byrnes’ defense did all it could, holding Dutch Fork to less than 300 total yards and just 70 yards passing, but the Rebel offense couldn’t find its footing all evening. Dutch Fork’s defense — with multiple Division 1 prospects on the defensive line — was exactly as good as advertised.
The Rebels accumulated just 35 passing yards and 113 total yards all game.
Byrnes didn’t cross the Dutch Fork 40 in the contest.
Dutch Fork advances to play Dorman in the Class 5-A Division 1 state semifinals.
Byrnes finishes 8-4 on the season.
