For former Byrnes running back Rahjai Harris, it’s always about the youth.

Harris — who was a star running back at East Carolina University and a current NFL free agent — returned to Duncan last week to host his fourth-annual kids camp.

The goal of the camp, Harris says, is to help train future athletes in both their skill sets and mindsets.

“The goal in all of this is just to encourage these kids to chase their dreams,” said Harris. “That’s what matters most.”

Turnout for this year’s camp (held at Byrnes Freshman Academy) was the highest in the event’s four-year history. Over 100 local youth athletes took part in the camp.

The camp, which ran from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 26, was completely free to attend.

Harris poured out his thanks to everyone involved who helped make the camp free of charge.

“Every donor, every sponsor, every repost and like [on social media], that’s what makes this possible,” said Harris. “I appreciate all of the staff that came out here to help today. I’m thankful for [Byrnes head football coach] Reggie Shaw for allowing me to use the fields here today.

“I’m thankful for everyone who had a pinky toe in helping put this event together.”

Campers had the opportunity to participate in several drills and activities throughout the event. Attendees were even treated to words of wisdom from another Rebel backfield star of old — former Byrnes and South Carolina Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore.

Lattimore offered the kids in attendance some encouraging words about self-empowerment not just through football, but in all walks of life.

After another rousing success of a camp, Harris left reaffirmed in his mission and meaning for the yearly event.

“We must be doing something right,” Harris said. “To have this kind of a turnout, to have the most kids show up this year is incredible. None of it’s possible without everyone involved.”
