Byrnes star running back Tre’ Segarra officially has a college home.
On Tuesday morning, the 4-star Segarra committed to LSU, choosing the Tigers over Penn State, Indiana, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
LSU — which wasn’t originally on Segarra’s list of final five teams — jumped into the conversation late and made an impressive last-minute push to earn a commitment from last year’s Region 2 5-A Offensive Player of the Year and Greer News Most Valuable Player.
“The thing about recruiting is you never want to close any doors,” said Segarra. “LSU had reached out to me later in my process, and when I had cancelled one of my official visit weekends recently, [running backs] Coach [Kevin] Smith asked if I would come take an OV to LSU that weekend instead. I figured, ‘Why not?’”
Segarra said he was impressed with the campus in Baton Rouge, as well as intrigued by how LSU coaches said he could contribute early. The Byrnes rising senior says he anticipates getting quality playing time as a freshman.
“The plan is for me to play early and help however I can,” said Segarra. “At the end of the day, I can see myself in LSU’s offense because of the style and how they want to use backs in different situations.
“Being at Byrnes, I have been able to experience different offensive systems and pick up a lot of skills. I can catch the football out of the backfield, I can block, I can do it all. I want to take that to the next level with LSU.”
Segarra said he can’t wait to be in Baton Rouge, and that LSU checks every box for what he’s looking for in a college.
“When I got to LSU for the first time, I loved it,” said Segarra. “I had a vision for what I wanted my college experience to be, and after getting there and meeting Coach [Lane] Kiffin for the first time, it kind of checked all the boxes for me.”
