The Greer Parks & Recreation U8 All-Star Softball team made history last weekend, capturing the first SCAB State Championship in program history.

The SCAB State Tournament — hosted in North Augusta — pitted the best community All-Star teams against each other in a tournament-style, double-elimination format. Greer had never made the tournament before, and in their first appearance, the team made the most of it.

Greer went 5-1 in the tournament, with the team’s only loss coming to Lower Florence in the second round. After that loss sent Greer into the loser’s bracket of the tournament, the team would rattle off an incredible four straight wins, including two run-rule wins over that same Lower Florence team in the championship series.

“Honestly, the state tournament felt like it was four weeks long, that’s how crazy it was,” said McGraw. “When we made it to the championship, I just told the girls to go out there and leave everything on the field. They’d made it this far. Go show everyone what you can do.”

McGraw said this year’s team will always have a special place in his heart, and for reasons greater than any state championship trophy.

“I’ve never seen a team come together and just be best friends like this one,” said McGraw. “There was no arguing, no fighting, nothing. And when they got out there on the field, especially in those run-rule championship games, it was like they were moving as one unit. It was incredible.”
