In front of an auditorium packed with her family members and friends, Greer track and field star Jewel Brantley put pen to paper Friday, signing to run at Georgia State University.
“I moved to Greer before ninth grade and started running track, and immediately, I knew that this was what I wanted to do,” said Brantley. “Greer, as a community, has always supported me. It’s always given me an extra push, even when I didn’t have it in myself.”
Brantley, who is a state champion for Greer in both track and field and weightlifting, had several of her coaches speak about her impact during her signing day.
“Jewel has been committed to this since the start,” said former Greer track-and-field coach Mike Meade. “She works tirelessly in everything she does, from the track to the weight room to the classroom.”
“She’s going to do very well, not just at [Georgia State], but with whatever comes next,” said strength coach Matt Landreth, who works closely with Brantley and prepares her specific workout regimens. “She has an incredible work ethic… I’m so proud of Jewel.”
Friends and family lined up for nearly 30 minutes after the signing to take photos with Brantley. She’s a beloved member of Greer High School — and the Greer community as a whole.
She’ll be taking that community love with her to Atlanta as she begins her college career as a Panther.
“I’ll forever rep Greer,” said Brantley. “I couldn’t be more thankful for all the people here who’ve helped me along in my journey.
“I truly don’t think I would have made it this far without the support of Greer.”
