South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) Interim Commissioner Amy Boozer announces the hiring of two new staff members. John Combs and Cindy Robarge-Esposito joined the SCHSL office Monday, July 27, 2026.
Combs joins the SCHSL staff as an Assistant Commissioner. He spent the last three years (2023-2026) as the Athletic Director at Spring Valley High School. He previously served at Spring Valley as a teacher and assistant basketball coach from 2001-2004.
“We are excited to welcome John to the League and are confident that his extensive experience in athletic leadership throughout our state will make an immediate and lasting impact,” said Interim Commissioner Boozer. “Throughout his career, John has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and service. His depth of knowledge, professionalism, and dedication to supporting others make him an exceptional addition to our staff. We look forward to the leadership and vision he will bring as we continue to serve and strengthen the League.”
Combs is a veteran Midlands basketball coach and administrator. His coaching and administrative career includes stints at Ben Lippen School (2016-2019), Ridge View High School (2005-2016), and Silver Bluff High School (2004-2005). During his coaching career, he led his team to multiple SCHSL and SCISA state playoff appearances. In 2011, his Ridge View team captured the SCHSL Lower State Championship and finished as State Runner-Up, marking the first appearance in a state championship game in school history.
Since 2006, he has served on the executive board of the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (SCBCA), where he currently serves as the Executive Director/Secretary Treasurer.
Combs began his career as a student manager before serving as a special assistant to the head coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks men’s program under Eddie Fogler. He earned both his bachelor's degrees in marketing and management and a master's degree in hotel, restaurant, and tourism management from the University of South Carolina. Comb’s passion for basketball began as a senior at Irmo High School in 1994, when he served as a student-manager under legendary coach Tim Whipple. That season, Irmo captured the SCHSL 4A State Championship.
Robarge-Esposito joins the staff at the SCHSL as the Director of Technology after serving the past five years (2021-2026) as the Computer Science Teacher at Beechwood Middle School.
Bringing a unique blend of experience in technology, media production, athletics, and education to the League, Robarge-Esposito has taught for over 20 years in both high school and middle school settings. She is a CATE-certified Media Technology and Computer Science educator with experience in video production, website design, coding, multimedia, live streaming, broadcasting, and digital communications.
“Cindy brings a unique blend of knowledge and experience to her role as Director of Technology,” said Interim Commissioner Boozer. “Her extensive background in technology, combined with her passion for teaching and supporting others, will be a tremendous asset to our membership. We are also excited to benefit from her experience in athletics and leadership, which reflects her commitment to teamwork, discipline, and developing others.” Boozer continued, “We look forward to the positive impact Cindy will have as she helps to lead our organization into the future.”
A Columbia native and graduate of Spring Valley High School, Robarge-Esposito was a four-year starter for the University of South Carolina Gamecock volleyball team. She became the first Columbia-area volleyball player to compete for the Gamecocks and the first South Carolina native to earn All-SEC honors in volleyball. During her collegiate career, South Carolina made three NCAA Tournament appearances and enjoyed one of the most successful eras in program history. In 2023, she was inducted into the Spring Valley High School Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of her athletic achievements and contributions to the sport.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina, Robarge-Esposito began her career in broadcast media before transitioning into coaching and education. She has coached volleyball at the collegiate, high school, and club levels for more than 20 years, earning multiple Region Coach of the Year honors while helping numerous student-athletes continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. She has also served multiple years as a volleyball color commentator for the University of South Carolina and the SCHSL Volleyball State Championships.
Cindy and her husband, Scott, reside in Gilbert, South Carolina. They have two children: a son, Vinny, who is entering his sophomore season as a member of the North Greenville University men's golf team, and a daughter, Gabby, a senior at Gilbert High School, who has committed to continuing her volleyball and academic career at the University of South Carolina Aiken.
