Byrnes High School’s Tre’ Segarra is the GreerNews.com Athlete of the Week, presented by D&D Motors.
Voting opened Monday and remained open until noon on Wednesday. Voters were able to cast a ballot once per day during the campaign.
Nominees for the week of August 18-24 included Segarra, Somad Eaddy of Riverside, MJ Posey of Eastside, and Gideon Merhib of Riverside.
Segarra rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns on Friday against T.L. Hanna, helping his Rebels open up play nicely at the new Nixon Field. His one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter marked the first points ever scored at the new field.
Segarra broke off a career-long 91-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to put the Rebels up 20-0 before half.
Byrnes cruised to a 30-10 victory in front of a sold-out home crowd.
“It was great to get a win and great to see the community pack out the stadium the way they did,” said Segarra.
“Tre’ was a spark plug for us,” said Byrnes head coach Reggie Shaw. "[T.L. Hanna] sold out to stop the run, but we knew that if we kept pressing, he was going to find a seam. And when he does, it’s electric.”
The GreerNews.com Athlete of the Week is a weekly initiative that will run 32 weeks during the 2025-2026 school year. Athletes from Greer, Byrnes, Riverside, Eastside, Greer Middle College, and Blue Ridge are eligible.
