For more than three decades, the Greer Police Department has participated in the Cops for Tots program.

Now entering its 36th year, this initiative has grown into the department’s largest community outreach event, uniting officers, families and community members in the holiday season.

Every year, Cops for Tots provides gifts to local children who might otherwise go without during the Christmas season. According to program organizers, the initiative is funded entirely through donations. For 36 years, the program has served thousands of children.

Each participating child is paired with a uniformed Greer Police officer, and together they walk through a makeshift toy store. Officers help the children select the perfect toys, books and games.

Families needing assistance through this year's Cops for Tots program can fill out an online application or fill one out in person at the Greer Police Department. The program is open to children from birth to twelve years of age who live in the City of Greer. Applications are open through Nov.19.

Cops for Tots is about more than giving gifts. It is about building lasting relationships between law enforcement and community members. This event gives children a chance to meet officers in a safe, fun environment.

As the program prepares for its 36th year, program organizers say that community support is more important than ever. Residents and businesses can participate by donating new, unwrapped toys for children ages birth to 12 years old or by making monetary contributions.

Donation boxes are typically located at the Greer Police Department and various collection sites across the city. Updated information about drop-off locations and deadlines will be available on the department’s website and social media pages.
