On Friday night, Eastside High School’s student body celebrated in the stands as it was revealed that the Eagles had raised $181,640.27 during Spirit Week. This year’s funds raised were donated directly to the Service Dogs for Veterans organization.
Service Dogs for Veterans provides a unique training program for Veterans to train their own service dog to help cope with post-service trauma and daily life.
Kellen Smouse of Eastside’s student government and Eastside Central Spirit said choosing this year’s charity was difficult, but Service Dogs for Veterans' mission stood out.
“When they came in to present to us, we were able to see the effects that some of these veterans were experiencing,” said Smouse. “And then we were able to see how valuable it was for them to have those service dogs there with them. When they explained what they do and how that money raised would benefit them, it was sort of a no-brainer.”
Smouse and others helped lead dozens of spirit week events, including dress-up days, competitions, class buyouts, and even an Eastside-themed version of “Saturday Night Live.”
The check reveal came at halftime of Eastside football’s game against Byrnes on Oct. 30. Smouse said he treasures the opportunity to raise so much money for an organization like Service Dogs for Veterans.
“We really pour everything we have into this, so to see it come to fruition like that is just crazy,” said Smouse. “When you can raise money for a good cause but then also do it besides some of your best friends and people you care about, that’s even better.”
Service Dogs for Veterans can receive donations and support through the organization's website.
