Vote

Greenville County’s Transportation Sales and Use Tax referendum has failed.

The Greenville County Council voted in July to put a transportation sales and use tax on the November ballot, leaving voters to decide if they wanted to add a special 1% sales tax within the county to fund future transportation infrastructure projects. This tax is commonly referred to as a penny tax.

Voters ultimately rejected the tax, with 48.49% voting in favor and 51.51% voting in opposition.

Some municipalities in Greenville County pursued their own penny tax referendums in this past election. All municipal penny taxes were passed by voters. Here’s how residents voted on those referendums:

  • City of Greenville — Approved with 66.63% of voters voting “yes.”

  • City of Mauldin — Approved with 54.18% of voters voting “yes.”

  • City of Simpsonville — Approved with 50.72% of voters voting “yes.”

  • Town of Travelers Rest — Approved with 56.8% of voters voting “yes.”
