The Greer Commission of Public Works (CPW) warns residents of a recent scam involving door-to-door salespeople.

According to a spokesperson from Greer CPW, some of its customers have reported individuals coming to their homes claiming to represent the company. They usually claim to sell solar or that they have ways to help customers reduce their utility bills.

Alison Rauch, the public information coordinator at Greer CPW, says that videos of the scammers show them introducing themselves as “Duke’s Net Metering Program” or “Greer CPW’s Net Metering Program.” They claim that electric rates have gone up by 14%, and sometimes even refer to customers by name. Rauch says that they are likely getting this information from the county tax map.

Greer CPW clarified that it does not have any door-to-door salespeople selling solar. Any contractor working for Greer CPW will be in clearly marked, highly visible vehicles and will have clothing representing their company, officials stated.

Officials also say to beware of individuals coming out to your home on weekends or over the holidays. Greer CPW customers can expect to see company employees during normal business hours, unless there is an emergency.

Rauch also emphasized that the CPW has not raised electric or natural gas rates for 2026, a common lie told by the scammers. Greer CPW announced its 2026 budget back in October with a slight change in the facilities charge for water and wastewater starting Jan.1, 2026.

One company that has been visiting several homes in the last week is Top Tier Solar of North Carolina. Greer CPW has confirmed that this company does not have a City of Greer business license or solicitor’s permit, and that the City and Greer Police Department are aware of the situation.

Any Greer CPW customer who experiences these door-to-door salespeople or is otherwise concerned that they are being scammed is encouraged to call Greer CPW at 864-848-5500.
