Halloween is quickly approaching, and the Greer Police Department is sharing some tips to stay safe.

“Halloween is a fun and exciting time for children and families, but safety should always remain a priority,” said Chris Forrester, public information officer at the Greer Police Department. “We encourage parents to take a few extra minutes to talk with their children about pedestrian safety, staying together and being aware of their surroundings. We also ask motorists to slow down and pay close attention in our neighborhoods.”

See the list of Halloween Safety Dos and Don’ts below:

Halloween Safety Dos:

  • Accompany younger children while trick-or-treating and encourage older children to stay in groups.

  • Use flashlights, glow sticks or reflective materials to make costumes more visible after dark.

  • Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks whenever possible.

  • Make sure costumes fit properly and do not obstruct vision or movement.

  • Establish a planned route and return time for older children.

  • Inspect candy and treats before allowing children to eat them.

  • Stay in well-lit areas and visit homes that are clearly participating in trick-or-treating.

Halloween Safety Don’ts:

  • Allow children to enter unfamiliar homes or vehicles.

  • Cross streets between parked vehicles or while distracted by electronic devices.

  • Assume motorists can see pedestrians, especially after dark.

  • Wear masks or costumes that limit visibility.

  • Allow children to consume unwrapped or suspicious treats.

  • Forget to remain aware of your surroundings.
