After a slow first quarter, Greer football rolled Travelers Rest with 44 unanswered points for a 44-7 win on senior night.
Greer senior RB Calvin McCoy was the star of the show on offense, accounting for 197 total yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Xavier Sammet passed for 267 yards and three scores.
Travelers Rest opened the game by moving the ball down the field with relative ease via the ground game. But after a pair of first-quarter drives that saw the Devildogs amass 120 yards against an injury-plagued Jacket defense, Greer shut things down from there. Travelers Rest gained just 123 more yards the rest of the game.
“That’s two weeks in a row our defense, especially our defensive line, has played really well,” said Greer head coach Will Young. “There are some things we need to clean up, but we’ll work on things for next week.”
“After that first quarter, we locked in,” said senior defensive lineman Anius Smith. “We weren’t going to let them keep running the ball on us like that all game. We knew what we had to do.”
With the win, Greer improves to 5-4 on the year and 2-2 in Region 2-4A play. It sets up what is almost certainly a must-win game next week against rival Riverside, with both teams’ playoff aspirations hanging in the balance.
“It’s a huge game,” said Smith. “We know what the rivalry means, and especially with playoffs being at stake, we expect our fans to be there and be loud. We’re excited for the challenge.”
“It’s a big ballgame, a big rivalry,” said Young. “No matter who we have healthy and ready to go, we know our guys will be ready to go play.”
