On March 25, the City of Greer officially turns 150 years old. The city is celebrating this once-in-a-lifetime milestone known as a sesquicentennial with Greer150, a collaborative initiative with the Greer Heritage Museum.
Greer150 is more than a birthday celebration. It is an opportunity to tell the story of Greer, how far we have come, and where we are headed together. The Greer150 initiative is both a celebration and a reflection — a chance to honor the people and partnerships that built Greer while looking ahead to the next chapter of growth and opportunity.
While the year-long celebration continues throughout 2026, March is going to be a huge month for Greer150.
From Railroad Stop to Thriving City
Greer began as a simple railroad stop between Greenville and Spartanburg. A small but vibrant community quickly formed around the area that is now known as The Historic Greer Depot. Commerce, craftsmanship, and community spirit took root early.
On March 25, 1876, 15 men gathered to vote to officially incorporate the Town of Greer’s, which was later shortened to Greer. What started as a modest railroad hub has grown into one of the Upstate’s most dynamic cities, known for its thriving downtown, strong business community, cultural diversity, and deep sense of civic pride.
A Celebration Built on Community
Strong partnerships between businesses, nonprofits, civic groups, and residents have always been woven into the fabric of Greer. Greer150 reflects that same spirit and provides an opportunity to showcase the city’s community-driven success.
Throughout the year, residents can expect monthly themed events, community storytelling initiatives, cultural programming, signature celebrations, heritage projects, and volunteer opportunities.
