Hyco, the nine-year veteran of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, passed away Dec. 8 surrounded by his family.
K9 Hyco began his service at the Greenville County Sheriff's Office in November of 2016. Halfway through his 600-hour training, it was determined that his amiable personality was not conducive to the type of work done by a patrol canine.
Hyco, however, possessed a razor-sharp sense of smell, and officials at the Sheriff’s office say his ability to locate illegal narcotics was exceptional. It was determined that K9 Hyco would be transferred to the newly formed Criminal Interdiction Unit and was assigned to Deputy Jesse Wasserman.
After the conclusion of their training, Wasserman and Hyco began their career on Interstate 85 in February of 2017. Over the years to follow, Hyco was a force to be reckoned with, working diligently to quash criminal activity up until his recent retirement.
K9 Hyco was responsible for the arrest of several hundred criminals and the seizure of:
995.60 pounds of marijuana
64.66 pounds of methamphetamine
90.56 pounds of cocaine
6.62 pounds of fentanyl
186 grams of MDMA
100 ounces of GHB
4.1 grams of heroin
32 illegal firearms
4500 cartons of untaxed cigarettes
In addition, Hyco located over $1.1 million of illicit U.S. currency tied to criminal organizations.
