The Greer area was well-represented at Saturday’s Touchstone Energy North-South Bowl in Myrtle Beach.
Blue Ridge head coach John Boggs served as the head coach of the North All-Star team as it defeated the South All-Stars 35-27.
“I’m proud of this group,” said Boggs. “Things started to get a little crazy in this one, but we talked at halftime about resiliency and just battling, and that’s exactly what these guys did.”
Gavin Forrester of Blue Ridge played defensive back for the North team and had multiple pass breakups. Forrester, whose primary position throughout his high-school career was quarterback, showcased his playmaking ability on the defensive side of the ball.
“It feels amazing to show what I can do on the other side of the ball out here,” said Forrester. “There were two plays where I wish I had come down with a pick, but other than that, I’m happy with how I played.”
Byrnes DL Joshua Kyerefo was also selected for the game. He made his presence known early in the contest, coming up with a sack in the first quarter for the North.
Kyerefo was thrilled to be able to participate in the game, as he was added at the last minute following another player’s disqualification.
The senior Rebel found out on Monday he’d be playing in Saturday’s North-South Bowl.
“I was in the kitchen cooking food, and my head coach [Reggie Shaw] called me and told me I was going to the North-South game,” said Kyerefo. I was like, ‘Excuse me? Wow!’ I was just so excited for the moment.”
The North team held a 28-10 lead late in the game before the South closed the gap to 28-20 in the fourth quarter. A 94-yard kickoff return for a TD from Clinton’s Javen Cook, however, put the game out of reach.
Boggs and the North team pulled out a hard-fought victory.
“This is an all-star game for a reason,” said Boggs. “Both teams fought really hard to win this one. It was two teams just refusing to lose and battling it out. That’s what it’s all about.”
