Spartanburg District Five Superintendent Dr. Randall Gary has announced his plans to retire effective Dec. 31, 2026.
The District Five Board of Trustees accepted Gary's retirement during their Monday night board meeting. He worked for 31 years in public education and joined the District Five team in 2019.
“These years have been among the most rewarding of my professional career, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in a district that is deeply committed to excellence and to the success of every student,” Gary said in a letter to the Board.
Board Chair, Dr. Millie Malone, thanked Gary for his leadership at Monday’s meeting.
“From new students, to new schools, District Five has grown tremendously during the last seven years, thanks to Dr. Gary’s leadership and commitment,” Malone said. “We are very sad to see him go and are deeply grateful for his impact and dedication to our district. He leaves a tremendous legacy and we can only hope to find a leader as strong to fill his shoes.”
After joining Spartanburg District Five, Gary guided the school system through several significant milestones, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the successful passage of two bond referendums. Most recently, he led the district as it opened several new schools and constructed a new stadium at Byrnes High School.
Gary will continue to work through December as the Board plans the search for the next superintendent. A timeline, along with all search details, will be shared with the District Five community once plans are finalized.
“Over the coming months, I remain committed to the work ahead, and to supporting a smooth and successful leadership transition for the District,” Gary said. “… I will always be proud of what we have accomplished together and grateful for the relationships and experiences that have shaped my time here.”
