The Town of Lyman is honoring its local veterans and active-duty service members with its Hometown Heroes program.
As the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, banners bearing the names and faces of 26 local heroes have been hung across downtown Lyman. Most of the banners can be viewed from Ridge Street, with a few placed throughout town in significant areas for the honorees.
“We're really excited to be able to recognize our veterans in this way,” said Lyman Mayor David Petty. “These individuals have contributed not only to the Lyman community, but to our country as well, and we want to thank them for their service.”
Town officials say the banners will remain on display through Veterans Day. In addition to the banners, the Town will host a special recognition event on Saturday, June 27, at the Lyman Event Center.
Beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, the Hometown Heroes event will give extra recognition to Lyman’s service members. The whole community is invited, but Petty says he also hopes the event feels like a reunion for the town’s military families, giving them space to share their stories.
“I think it’s important to share these stories whenever we can,” Petty said. “There are a number of folks who are recognized on these banners who are no longer with us — many of them World War Two veterans. Their stories live on in our telling of them now, so we wanted to create a space for that.”
