Byrnes football has hired Shuler Bentley as the team’s new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Bentley — the son of state-champion former Byrnes head coach Bobby Bentley — most recently served as offensive coordinator for Montgomery Catholic High School in Alabama.
“I am excited about the addition of Shuler Bentley as OC and QB coach,” Byrnes head coach Reggie Shaw told Cole Bryson of The Fan Upstate. “He brings great knowledge and experience in developing quarterbacks and the passing game. He has also been part of some great college staffs and offenses, which have expanded his knowledge base and broadened his experience. He played at a high level here at Byrnes and understands this program and what it takes to be successful. I believe we made a home-run hire.”
Bentley returns to the Rebels after a wildly successful playing career at Byrnes. In his tenure at Byrnes High School from 2010-13, Bentley finished as Byrnes’ all-time leading passer and the state’s career leader in total touchdowns (178). He also broke the state record for most touchdown passes in a season, throwing for 71 as a senior.
Bentley was named South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year two times in his playing career at Byrnes. He played college football at Old Dominion and Murray State, and immediately dived into coaching following the conclusion of his playing career.
He held coaching positions at Troy, Coastal Carolina, and Charleston Southern before deciding to coach at the high school level in Alabama.
