Another week, another game where Byrnes is wondering what could have been.
After going up 10-0 early against Gaffney, the Rebels fell victim to their own self-inflicted wounds in a 28-16 loss to the Indians.
Two fumbles in the second quarter helped Gaffney back into the game, as the Indians took a 14-10 lead into halftime. The second half was no better for Byrnes, as the Rebels found themselves in the red zone three times, turning the ball over once and settling for field goals both other trips.
Banks Bouton stole the show for the Indians at quarterback, throwing the ball well and rushing for an 80-yard touchdown down the right sideline in the third quarter.
With the loss, the Rebels fall to 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in region play.
"There's still a lot of football left to be played," said Byrnes head coach Reggie Shaw. "Disappointed in the mistakes and the lack of ball control tonight."
Tre' Segarra rushed for 182 yards in the losing effort, and kicker Zachary Reinert had his best game of the season going three-for-three on field goals.
Byrnes will take on Eastside next week at home before welcoming rival Spartanburg to Nixon Field on Oct. 24.
"The details make a big difference," said Shaw. "You can't turn the ball over against teams this good and expect to win. We've got to get better from here."
