Scores and brief recaps from all three games in the Greer area on Sept. 5:
Hillcrest 55, Greer 16
Greer's woes to begin the season continue. Hillcrest used multiple big plays on offense, including a 55-yard touchdown reception and a 67-yard touchdown run, to pull away from Greer and send the Jackets to 0-3 on the year.
Calvin McCoy and Dawson Fowler each ran for a touchdown for the Jackets, but the positives mainly stop there.Â
No time to sulk for Greer, however, as it welcomes Byrnes to Dooley Field for a rivalry clash next Friday. The Rebels will be hungry for revenge after Greer knocked off Byrnes 18-10 last season, the Jackets' first win in the series in 23 years.
Christ Church 37, Riverside 35
A heartbreaker for the Warriors.
After being gashed defensive for most of the game by a potent Christ Church run game, the Riverside defense stepped it up in the fourth quarter, coming up with a fumble and a turnover on downs.
Riverside rallied from down 34-20 in the final frame, taking a 35-34 lead with 40 seconds to go. Keyon Knowles rushed in from three yards out to make the score 34-33, and Jaiden "Speedy" Taylor gave Riverside the lead with a two-point conversion on a pop pass from QB Gideon Merhib.
Christ Church quarterback Judd Windham led a heroic final drive in the waning seconds, however, making several big completions before finally, Ryan Von Wyl kicked the game-winning 35-yard field goal as time expired.
Riverside falls to 1-2 on the season ahead of a clash at Dorman on Sept. 19.
Full game recap from the Riverside loss will be coming soon.
Blue Ridge 35, Polk County (NC) 19
It was the Gavin Forrester and Mitchell Bobbit show at Jim Howard Field on Friday night.
Behind four total touchdowns from Blue Ridge quarterback Gavin Forrester (two passing, two rushing) and two touchdowns from Mitchell Bobbitt (one receiving, one 80-yard punt return) the Tigers improved to 2-0 on the year.
Blue Ridge will face off with Eastside, a team who is also feeling good at 2-0, next Friday night at home.
Full game recap from the Blue Ridge win will be coming soon.
