Jackson, defense dominant in Greer's 52-0 win over Union County

Thursday night marked the 55th meeting between Greer and Union County — famously known as the “Jacket Bowl.”

This one was all Greer.

Greer jumped all over the fellow Yellow Jackets of Union County early, putting up 28 first-quarter points en route to a 52-0 win. The victory puts Greer at 2-0 on the season, the program’s first 2-0 start since 2015.

“I don’t know how good we are yet, but we just want these kids to get better everyday,” said Greer head coach Will Young. “It’s hard when you’re 0-3 or 0-2 to convince the players they’re playing well, so this is a good feeling for them. We just want them to keep getting better everyday.”

Though the “Jacket Bowl” isn’t quite the powerhouse matchup it used to be — with Greer and Union County meeting deep in the playoffs multiple times in the early-mid 2000s — Young stressed the importance of the rivalry to his team pregame.

“We made sure to talk to the players about the history of this game,” said Young. “Everybody used to know about the Jacket Bowl back in the day. Both teams are probably a ways away from where we were back then. But we’re getting there. We’ve got a good group of kids who really want to learn."

On Thursday night, Greer QB Xavier Sammet and RB Calvin McCoy picked up right where they left off in last week’s win over Woodmont. The pair combined for 212 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

All six of Greer’s offensive touchdowns came on the ground. Greer RB Zy Foster capped off the game’s scoring with a 60-yard TD run in the third quarter.

Another star of the game for Greer, however, was wide receiver/defensive back Terrell Jackson. Jackson, who shined on offense last week vs. Woodmont, got his chance to showcase his skills prominently on defense against Union County.

The junior had two interceptions, including a 21-yard second-quarter pick-six, in Greer’s dominant win. Greer’s defense as a whole came away with six turnovers.

“It feels great to contribute to my team,” said Jackson. “My teammates put me in good positions to make big plays… coming into the season, I didn’t think I was going to be on fire like this. I just thank the Man Above.”

Greer will now turn its attention to next Friday’s matchup vs. Blue Ridge as the Jackets look to begin the year with three straight wins.

“I think we’re playing well as a team and coming together, playing for each other,” said Jackson. “But we still have areas to improve on both sides of the ball. We’ll get where we want to be.”
