The railroad crossing at Line and Moore Streets in Greer is currently undergoing construction for safety upgrades.
According to officials with the city, this project is being completed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. It includes installing new warning signals and improving the curb, gutter and sidewalk at the crossing. The city has not been told an official timeline for the project.
“This crossing was selected for safety improvements under the Federal Section 130 program for railroad warning device upgrades,” said Michelle Willis, director of communications with the City of Greer. “We hope to improve driver and pedestrian safety in that area.”
The Section 130 Program provides federal funds to eliminate hazards at public railroad crossings. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the program has been correlated with a significant decrease in fatalities, with a decrease of 41% from 2000 to 2023. As of publication, the SCDOT has completed its portion of the project with improvements to the curb, gutter and sidewalk. Norfolk Southern continues to work on the warning signals.
In addition to the safety work at Line and Moore Streets, the city is also working on a Quiet Crossings feasibility study at several railroad crossings in Greer. A quiet crossing is a section of railroad track where train operators do not sound their horn as they approach a crossing.
“The city hopes that collaborating with Norfolk Southern and SCDOT will be an efficient and cost-effective way to facilitate quiet crossings in Greer and improve the quality of life for people who live in the downtown area,” Willis said.
