Greer junior goalkeeper Edwin Altamirano had several big saves in the Jackets' PK shootout win over Byrnes on Monday. In his first year at Greer, he's proving to be a reliable pair of hands (and a respected voice) for his new team.

Edwin Altamirano is still getting his first few games with Greer soccer under his belt.

You’d never know it.

The junior goalkeeper, who played at Southside last year, is performing well and fitting right in after just two starts with the Jackets. On Monday night, Altamirano made a huge save in a penalty kick shootout vs. Byrnes, helping Greer escape with a 4-3 win in the shootout.

“We lost two leaders at the goalkeeper position last year,” said Greer head coach Nick Roberson. “But Edwin has stepped in, and not only do the boys love him, but he’s been standing on his head for us in goal.”

“I haven’t really even been nervous coming to a new school,” said Altamirano. “My coaches are amazing. The fans are amazing. I love everything about this place. It’s absolutely fantastic.”

With the game tied at one goal apiece near the end of regulation, Altamirano also came up with a huge diving save on Byrnes star striker Tre’ Segarra.

“As soon as I saw the ball bounce in front of [Segarra], I knew he was going to shoot,” said Altamirano. “I just wanted to make sure that after I dived for it, I didn’t let up a rebound. That could’ve given them the game-winning goal.”

Altamirano is enjoying his first few starts in the net for the Jackets. But he’s not unfamiliar with Greer itself. He’s just unfamiliar with being in the yellow and black himself.

Last year, Altamirano was the starting goalkeeper for Southside when the Tigers eliminated Greer in the 4-A Upper State Semifinals.

“Honestly, I think the way last season ended for [Greer] has the guys more motivated than ever,” said Altamirano. “We only have one goal right now. That’s to win the state.”

“This team is motivated. We just want to go for it,” said Roberson. “They’re not complacent with what happened last year or the records we set. They just don’t have that mindset in them. They’re hungry, and they want more.”

Unquestionably, Greer will rely on Altamirano’s abilities as the Jackets chase a first-ever soccer state title.

He’s proving more than reliable so far.

“Even after Edwin had some injuries come up just before the season, he’s still working in the shadows to keep getting better,” said Roberson. “So when he comes out for moments like tonight, he’s ready. He’s tough as nails, still battling through an ankle injury.

“The boys love him, and they respect him. When he talks, the team listens. That’s exactly what you need from your goalkeeper.”
